Self-Realization
Atma Vichara - Kundalini Awakening - Ego Transcendence
Spiritual Self-Realization is the profound realization that you are not this body and that you are not even your mind but that you are pure, undivided (non-dual) Consciousness - or Spirit.
There are 3 levels of to this “enlightenment” you can reach:
1. Savikalpa Samadhi.
Samadhi means absorption, it’s when the consciousness is fully resting in its own source. Sa- means with- and -vikalpa means “distinctions” or “thought-forms”. So Savikalpa Samadhi is consciousness arbsorbed in its own Source with thoughtforms still present.
2. Nirvikalpa Samadhi
Nir- means without, so Nirvikalpa samadhi is absorption into the Self without thoughtforms.
3. Sahadja Samadhi
Sahadja Samadhi means “natural samadhi”, i.e. a samadhi that is permanent and without effort. This is what’s called true Enlightenment and can be seen for example in Eckhart Tolle.
Personally, I’ve reached Savikalpa Samadhi and moments of Nirvikalpa Samadhi and I am slowlty working towards making my Self-Realization permanent. For me, what has worked best is what’s called the “Direct Path”.
Sri Ramana’s Atma Vichara (holding on to the Atman) is the technique I have been using. When you do this, Kundalini Shakti, (metaphysical energy from Source) starts to fill your consciousness and eat away at the blockages in your system, moving from the base of your spine towards your Crown Chakra. This process is illustrated in the background image.
Kundalini Rising - Unveiling Your True Self
Where the Inner Fire rises through the stillness of Being
If you’d like my help with Self-Realization and raising your Kundalini for a life lived in a constant “High” - a nourishing, natural and very spiritual high - that transmutes your pain and blockages and enables you to manifest more love and abundance in your life and the lives of others, then I have just the program for you.
In this 7 week program we’ll gradually but rapidly lead you to your true Self, called the Atman in Hinduism (this linked article is recommended reading beforehand and maps the journey we are going to make, from ego, to soul, to the one Self). We’ll have 2 sessions of +/- 2 hours per week. Here’s the program:
Week 1 — The Now as Gateway
“To be free of time is to be free of the psychological need of past for your identity and future for your fulfillment.”
— Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
In the first week we’ll study Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now. This book helps you get in touch with the Power of Presence in an accesible way, and teaches you about the ego and the pain-body. We’ll read the first two chapters for the first session and the second two for the second session. Each session we’ll also have a guided meditation that takes you practically through the lessons of the week.
Goals:
- Introduction to the Real Self vs. the personal self (ego-mind)
- Recognizing the present moment as the only reality
- Recognizing stillness beneath though
Week 2 — Dissolving the Mind-Identity
“All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present.”
- Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
In the second week, we’ll finish Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now. We’ll read chapter 5-10 but you can skip chapter 6 and 9. We’ll have two fresh new meditations, inspired by Eckhart Tolle, that will learn you to heal yourself. The main goals of this week are:
Accepting what is vs. resisting what arises
Noticing ego mechanisms from stillness
Practice in shifting awareness from thought to being
Week 3 — The Self Beyond the Mind
"Happiness is the nature of the Self. They are not different. The only happiness there is, is of the Self."
— Sri Ramana Maharsihi
The third week we’re going deeper. Eckhart Tolle is accessible and profound, however, if we want to know more about the real Self, the Atman, Sri Ramana Maharishi is the place to go to. In the first week of studying Ramana, we’ll read chapters one and two of True Happiness: The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi and we’ll learn about Self-Inquiry, his constant reminder to really - deeply - ask yourself “Who am I?”.
The Goals:
Happiness as the Self: All beings inherently seek happiness, which is not found in external objects but within Oneself. This happiness is experienced in deep sleep when the mind is absent, it rejuvenates the body and soul. The Presence of this “Higher” Self can also be here now if we awaken it via meditation.
Consciousness as Reality: “Being” or Consciousness (Brahman) is the only reality. The waking, dream, and sleep states are all experiences within this consciousness.
Self-Inquiry: The practice of asking "Who am I?" leads one to the realization of the Self, which is beyond the mind and body.
Week 4 — Abide as That: Living from the Self
“To know the Self, the mind must be quiet.”
— Sri Ramana Maharsihi
In week 4 we’ll turn the Self-Inquiry into Self-Abidance, after we have learned about who we really are, we can start to make constant contact with this Self via deep meditation. We’ll learn from Shunyamurti how to make contact with this deep Self and master Sri Ramana’s technique of Atma Vichara.
Goals:
Learn to abide as the one Self.
Find out how to make contact with the Self in meditation.
Week 5 — The Rise of Inner Fire
“When Kundalini is awakened, your entire system is brought into a higher vibration. It burns away illusion.”
— Adyashanti
In week 5 we’ll learn about Kundalini, the energy that comes up when meditating on the Self. It is a fiery, blissful energy that rejuvenates your body and energy. It burns away impurities in your soul and upgrades your system. Kundalini activation through Self-realization enables divine energy to descend into your consciousness, turning you into a lighthouse of love, bliss and wisdom.
Goals:
Have your Kundalini rise through Self-Realization
Let Kundalini Shakti burn away blockages in your system
Feel the rejuvenating and blissful power of Kundalini
Week 6 — Burning through Illusion
"The ego cannot do it by its own bootstraps. It has to surrender."
— Shunyamurti
In week 6 we’ll deepen our relationship with the Self. The ego has many defense mechanisms that prevent it from fully embracing its surrender to the Self. This week we’ll gather knowledge about the attachments we still have to the egoic state of consciousness and learn how to purify our being from the last vestiges of the ego.
Goals:
Identify what keeps you stuck in the ego state of mind
Purify the mind further of obstacles to surrender
Week 7 — Becoming a Bodhisattva
“Live as the Self. Speak as the Self. Walk as the Self. The world will adjust.”
— Shunyamurti
Live in the world as no one. Let Truth act through you. Become a lighthouse in the dream. This week we’ll learn how to not only connect with the Self in meditation but to live, to work, and to stay continuously in connection with the true Self. We’ll focus on your future as a Self-realized being.
Goals:
Meditation throughout everyday life.
Formulate commitments for your spiritual path.
